Directions to trail head:  110 Freeway to San Pedro and take the Gaffey St. exit.  Bear left and take Gaffey St. South.  Turn right on West 25th St.  Turn left on S. Western Ave.  Turn left on W. Paseo del Mar.  When you arrive at White Point Nature Preserve turn left into their parking lot.  There is no parking fee.  Please bring folding chairs.  There are port-a-pottys available at White Point Nature Preserve.

Hiking options:   Please look at and print the two attached maps.
Basic Hike:  4.5 miles RT.
Extended Hike:  7.5 miles RT.

Basic Hike:  We’ll begin at the White Point Nature Preserve picnic area and take the outside trail, turn right toward the Vista Trail, then turn left, heading northeast on the trail to the first gun emplacement.  Go thru the tunnel and turn right.  Continue until you reach the second tunnel and gun emplacement (the two gun emplacements were built in 1942 as part of the US coastal defense system, each housing a 16-inch gun).   After going thru the second tunnel, turn left and follow trail left toward the Air Force housing.  Continue along the trail until you turn east at Silvius Ave. exit.

Follow Silvius Ave. to Walker Ave. then turn right.

Proceed one block to 37th St. then turn left.

Continue east on 37th St. to Emily St., then turn left.

Continue on Emily St., then turn right on 36th St.

Continue until you come to Cabrillo Ave. where you’ll find a hole in the fence on the left side, go thru the hole in the fence, and turn right onto Leavenworth Dr.

We can spend 15 minutes visiting the Marine Mammal Recovery center.  Good time for a cookie break.

We’ll continue on Leavenworth past the Fort MacArthur Military Museum.  Unfortunately it will be closed, but you can see the pet cemetery and Osgood and Farley Gun Battery’s.

From there we continue up the trail to Angel’s Gate Park (there are nice restrooms there) and The Korean Friendship Bell.  We’ll proceed down the hill from the Friendship Bell, and turn right on Paseo del Mar (restrooms are available) and return to White Point Nature Preserve, the Nike Site and Nature Museum.

Extended Hike:  Those who wish to add a few more miles can turn left on Paseo del Mar after the Korean Friendship Bell and continue to Point Fermin Light House and Park (restrooms available).  Walk around the park then turn right onto Shepard St.  After about 50 yards turn right on a small street that becomes the Sunken City Trail.  At Pacific Ave. take Bluff Place down to Stephen M. White to Cabrillo Beach and walk along the wooded boardwalk to the tide pools.  Return to the Cabrillo Bath House (restrooms available) and a possible lunch break at picnic tables.  At the gated entrance we turn right on Stephen M. White and up the hill then left on Pacific Ave.  Turn right on 37th heading up the hill to the Korean Friendship Bell.  We take the trail down to Paseo del Mar like we did before where we turn right.  We cross the street and find a dirt path where we jog down some stairs to the ocean and find our way back up another trail.  Then continue to the White Point Nature Preserve.
